Possible PoTBS Delay

I was going over the news this morning and reading the latest Pirates of the Burning Sea dev log and I came across this little tidbit of info:

"So, if we go down the route of a big box release (though it’ll still be available via digital distribution) it will require a delay in the release date. I’m not excited about delaying the game, but I am excited about a great launch.

The reason we haven’t talked in more detail about this is because we don’t have a signed contract with a distributor. Having been through a number of these legal negotiations, you never know exactly what’s going to happen until you have a signed document. So while we may delay, we’re still aggressively working towards finishing the game now, and have been putting our contingency plans in place."

So...prepare yourself for a possible delay in the release date of PoTBS while they sort out their distribution issues. They don't say how long the delay will be, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be too long...could it? Also, this "contingency plan" of theirs may make this delay disappear...so, we'll see.

On the good news side, they are going to be expanding the beta for the game. So far, they've been very stringent on who gets into the beta, but it looks like the flood gates may be opening soon.

From a development standpoint...it looks like they're polishing the game at this point, which is a good sign for a solid launch. We'll have to see if they "get" what MMO players are now expecting of their games in a post-WoW world.

The Gaming Blahs

There seems to be nothing going on right now...and that usually means that something is going on.

Do you ever have one of those weeks when you've had a busy day at work, you've made dinner for the family, gave the kids a bath, put them to bed. You then turn on the computer and settle in for some gaming...and then, nothing. You just stare at the computer screen for 15 minutes wondering wtf you're going to play? I've had one of those weeks. A week where I turn on the computer, stare at it, fiddle around a bit and then leave to go do something else downstairs....it's very weird. I think I watched more TV last week than I have the last six moths combined.

It's not as if I don't have anything to play. LoTR Online...check. My Captain is up to level 15 and my Champion is up to level 7. I guess I could mine nodes and work on my crafting but the crafting system really hasn't motivated me in this game just yet. Eve Online...check. Skill training is still going. Silent Hunter 4...no so check. Lots o' bugs in the game still, so I continue to hold off really getting into that one. Vangurad...no so check. I haven't logged into that game for a bit and it looks like that adventure is coming to an end for me. WoW...account canceled. I didn't like doing it, but it had to be done. My wife and her friend are planning to start a couple of alliance characters in the future, so maybe I'll resub around that time. BC fell really short in my book, but maybe I just need a new perspective on the game and start fresh....but then again...

I'm in zero betas right now, so I have nothing to report there....so what the heck have I been doing lately? Well, I've been going gang busters on my guitar playing (...yes, I can play. No, you'll never hear me play, so don't ask :) . Oh yeah, and barre chords are the devil!!). The good news is that even though there is really no news, there is still lots to talk about...so stay tuned for the usual stuff from TCSG.

Bah...I usually get into this game blah state once every 1-2 months and then it promptly disappears. LoTR launches tomorrow, so I can finally get past 15, so I'll be going gangbusters on that title as soon as I can. My goal is to get past level 30 by June because come that time it's "Avast you sorry sacks of entrails...hoist the main sail!!"

The Journey

OK, so Eve continues it's love/hate relationship with me. Man, playing that game reminds me of a girl I dated in high school once. She's very pretty and is a great dancer, but sometimes she'll kick you square in the balls.

I opted to start communicating with my corps again (yes, I've been kinda silent while I figure this game out) and start the journey to 0.0...an area of the game which I haven't experienced yet. The corps officers immediately wanted me on vent and catch me up on things...which was really nice. They answered all of my stupid questions and even gave my sorry/poor ass some cash for supplies for the next month or so.

I did some equipping for the journey and started my first journey in 0.0...and I was very nervous for the trip, despite the corps telling me that the path is all clear. I mapped out the path and off I went, each jump I checked local for anyone who wasn't green or blue to me. With all of the talk about 0.0 that I've heard over the past year, I honestly thought that I'd be blown up after the first jump. Suffice to say that I made all jumps into 0.0 without incident and now I'm ready to experience Eve in a different way...at least, that's what I'm hoping.

Not too sure how much longer I will last in Eve given the MMOs that are coming out. PoTBS is a definite right now, and it's coming out in June I think. Let's face it, Warhammer will be a Q1 2008 release (at the earliest). Conan hasn't pushed any of my buttons at all...yayyy, I can chop off heads and it looks good, but what else? Oh yeah, their magic system is very interesting. Gods and Heroes is a possibility but again, the only thing I see right now are the animations and that ultimately won't sell me long term....and honestly, I'm still suspicious of the minion system. Who knows who will be on top of my play list at the end of 2007...it's interesting to speculate though. My guess is PoTBS, Eve and LoTR right now.

Great PoTBS info! Read it now

I know, I never post on a Sunday...and I'm sure there is something in the heavens that will smite me for it, but I had to give you guys this info.

It has some great stuff on Pirates of the Burning Sea. I was going to get this game anyway, but now I pretty much have too. The way crafting is handled is pure genius and something that I've never encountered before. I love the idea of contested ports...this may be the game that really gets me into PvP. One thing though, I want to be a Pirate, but I also want to be an Officer of the English navy....decisions, decisions.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the read.

Pirates and a Yo Ho Ho

Back fresh from a nice long weekend, hence the no post Friday from last week...so, we're back in the saddle again.

We're all still feeling quite a bit of fallout from GDC 2007. There has been so much information coming out that I'm having a bit of a hard time keeping up with it all. The MOG Army guys have put up their latest video offering in Ep.56 and they've got some good content in there...I was specifically drawn to the Pirates of the Burning Sea stuff that they showed off. As usual, and because it his turn, I blame Brent (Virgin Worlds) from putting this game back on my radar and now I'm putting the MOG guys on my list for making it a "must buy". A curse on all of your houses I say. Seriously though, this game is looking to be very good indeed. The features that are sticking out for me are the PvP ready world and the Naval combat...both combined make me really want to get my hands on this game. Now, I've said this before that I'm really not a PvP kind of guy, but Pirates seems to set the right tone for me in terms of implementation...even more so than Warhammer at this point. Players can perform PvE missions to destabilize a port and make that port ripe for the conquering. The sea around the port also becomes a huge PvP zone in which to conduct large naval battles. Saaaaweeeet. PotBS is supposed to come out in June 2007.

Another game thats starting to get me thinking is Stargate Worlds and already it's starting to worry me. They've indicated that the leveling curve will be relatively shorter than found in most MMOs today. This is to encourage players to enter the PvP part of the game as well as role alts to experience new content as it's put in. I'm still munching on this "quick" leveling implementation that they're proposing. I'm not exactly sure why its bothering me...it just does. Maybe it's because I'm use to a leveling system and thats what I expect, but I don't think so. I think I may be equating "quick leveling system" with "quick content", or "easy mode" gameplay in which you're just blasting through everything with relative ease. I always shake my head when I see people rushing through content just to get to level x first. An entire game in which I'm shaking my head at everyone who plays just points to a sore neck. We'll see...but a little red flag went up when I heard that. Everything else about the game sounds really good. Once again, Virgin Worlds has a great interview in show 60 with the latest and greatest on StarGate Worlds. Also, there is a good overview over at Ten Ton Hammer.

Thats it for now. Man...I've still got a list of topics I need to discuss regarding GDC and other things, but those can wait for another post.

Oh, Silent Hunter 4 should be out this week. I'll give a really short blurb on what I think about this one. This may be the only single player game I buy in 2007...so it's a big deal.
